PBSM(PCK) Camp

Didn't blog on Friday, Saturday and Sunday because I had PCK camp and had no time to blog.

Let me tell you how camp went.

First of all, PCK does NOT stand for Phua Chu Kang. It stands for Pertolongan Cemas Kemasyarakatan. First Aid camp lah.

Friday I reached home at 5.30pm, only had about 1 hour plus to pack my last minute stuff. Reached school at 7pm. Slept in 4 Bungaraya, block C. Was assistant dorm leader.. no big deal lah girls are pretty neat, arrange shoes nicely etc without being told.

For most people, it was a big knock on their head when they realised that they had signed up for a FIRST AID camp and not the ANNUAL camp. Means hardly any games/fun activities. We had courses all the way to prepare for the exam on the 3rd day. 5 courses altogether, 1 on Friday, 4 on Saturday. Each course varies, some 2 1/2 hours, some 4 1/2 hours.. etc.

So the people who signed up for the camp thinking it would be fun were WRONG. So they started causing problems, talking during courses, not paying attention, grumbling etc. The first night, some assistant director of PBSM(Tuan Chellapan?) at don't know what level camp to give us our 1st course. They managed to make him VERY VERY angry. He even threatened to cancel the whole camp! The trouble makers were a few boys.. I say those guys really spoilt the camp for ALL of us. Very selfish of them.

At night, we were supposed to do security, but an officer came and said no need, we need to save our energy for the next day. But they didn't tell us, so some of us(including me) woke up at the times we were supposed to wake up and waited and waited for the Security head to come. But he never did, so I went back to sleep(as most of us did).

2nd day, at 6.15am the whistle was blown. Had to line up in the school field. We were downed 20 times for the previous night's trouble. Considering how mad that guy was, I'd say we got off pretty lightly.

2nd day a different guy came, Azizul I think. He's in charge of all the schools' PBSM in Petaling. Something like that lah. He was very nice, much nicer than the Chellapan fella. He works better with teenagers as compared to the other guy. But somehow again, some people managed to get him soooo angry he shouted and shouted at us. Honestly, I'm not very sure what triggered him off. But I know I was following his instruction(to practice making bandages). He was even angrier when he heard one of them were leaving the camp that day. He threatened to fire us all from PBSM. In fact, he banned us from wearing our full PBSM uniform until he sees an improvement. Doesn't affeect me anyway, non-marches/non BOD members wear the RC t-shirt and jeans. Seems my school PBSM was named the best PBSM at some level last year. He told us he regretted doing that, and in the future he would tell other schools to do the exact OPPOSITE of my school's PBSM.

Then.. the worst part of the camp. After that, the camp commander didn't allow us to leave earlier for anything, including Easter. It was a very very major blow for me. Honestly, if I had known that would have happened, I wouldn't have gone for the camp at all. But.. they told me I could leave in between before.

I had to look for an illegal handphone(handphones not allowed), and call my brother to inform him that I couldn't go off earlier the next day, I tried to call as soon as possible, because it was 2.30pm Saturday at that time, I prayed that my church would be able to find a replacement for me.

Up to today, I'm feeling upset over what I did. Maybe I should have defied them, walk out of camp under their very noses. I feel I put God 2nd in this case.. I never felt so upset before. After all, we're supposed to leave everything behind and follow him.. perhaps I was afraid..

May I never let fear take a hold of me. Ever again.

Anyway, for the rest of the day, after he shouted at us, we were very good. Gave no more problems.

That night, at 12am, the camp committee 'forced' us to play a game. The 'Burung Hantu' game lah.. If you don't know what it is ask me. I really wasn't in the mood for it. This was a course camp.. we were exhausted, many wanted to sleep, many wanted to study. But they made us play the game. Normally I'd enjoy myself lah, but this time I walked around with my hands in my pocket. They didn't even tell us we'd get dirty.. dirtied my jeans which was meant for PBSM the next day.

Sunday- We were given 1 hour to study, 7.30am-8.30am. Then we were divided to 2 groups, 1 group took practical first, another took theory first. My group took theory exam first. Okay ler, Azizul gave plenty of tips beforehand. He even gave us an assignment the night before which we had to complete in order to sit for the theory exam. Turns out the exact 3 questions in the assignment appeared in the Subjective part of the exam. I really scolded myself for copying it all without reading what I copied. Still, I wrote as much as I could, putting in more and more logical stuff. The subjective was worth 30 marks, 10 marks per question. So naturally I figured, the more answers the higher chance of getting full marks.

After that took the practical. There were 4 stations, each one having to do different stuff of all that we learnt. My first station with CP(Had to go with a partner) was the CPR one. I was really nervous about this, there wasn't enough time for everyone to try practicing CPR on the dummy beforehand, I didn't get a chance to. So my first time doing CPR was during the exam. Thank God for helping me remember everything I learned the day before. Hardly made any mistakes, was just corrected once or twice. The other 3 stations were easy. Cp and I managed to pass all the exams with hardly any trouble. =) They guided us through it though, I could see that they wanted us to pass. Whoever made mistakes were given a couple more of chances. I'm glad for that.

After that, whoever failed the theory exam had to retake it. They really wanted ALL of us to pass. Thank God I didn't fail though, didn't have to retake.

After lunch.. we had games. Okay ler, just a bit disgusting only. One of the games we had to stick our head into a big pail of water and try to fish out big stones with our MOUTH.

Anyway, had no time to finish the games, had to stop halfway through because it was nearing the end of camp.

What I learnt during camp: CPR, how to tie casts, bandages, treat broken bones, burns, injuries, etc. Very good camp, learnt a lot that will be useful for my life. And made many new friends.

What I wasn't too happy with: This is my opinion, not meant to offend anyone. First of all, some of the students were not disciplined at all. 2ndly, the committee were not very organised. And they didn't keep their word. First, they told me I could go for church. Then, suddenly during camp I couldn't. They didn't manage to end things on time.

Another thing that made me quite unhappy.. if handphones were not allowed for the campers, who gave the right for the committee members to have handphones? Maybe only the Camp Comm. and Vice Camp Comm., but not the rest. They were using it in front of us after they took away the illegal handphones. They make the rules, they break the rules. How do they expect US to be disciplined? I always believe we have to follow the rules we make.

That's all.

-Lord, forgive me. Remind me to always put you first in my life, may I never fear the consequences of defying others for Your Name's sake.-

Take care,
Joannetmj
