Mob Mentality

Just watched a video on the current situation in KL...

And I'm saddened by the utter disrespect the spectators displayed towards the police cars/buses.

I know that in humongous rallies such as these, the police are needed. Simply because of the dangers of mob mentality. Which you may google up if you have no freaking idea what that is. "Mob mentality". I have seen the mob mentality surface smaller scale, I cannot imagine the dangers of it in a crowd this big.

Especially when I know that a large number of people who head there have no such noble intentions like desiring clean and fair elections.

All of these policemen were probably forced out of bed and forced to remain sleep-deprived to control a rowdy crowd. Nearby my house are some police quarters, last Bersih I saw truck after truck of policemen leaving their apartments. Today that probably happened too. Poor guys. Hahaha.

I think it's fair to demand for these things. All races and religions are united in Bersih. But I hope nothing bad comes out of this.

May it be a peaceful rally, may there be no mob mentality violence, may everyone there return safely home when it is all over.

Am I asking for too much?

I'm exhausted. Nitez, ppl. Happy Bersih 3.0!

I'm back!

And I'm no longer inspired to write about refugees, not now anyway.

Bersih 3.0 is happening. In the last Bersih 2.0, I blogged this: http://joannetmj.blogspot.com/2011/06/bersih-20.html

Anyway, 3rd Bersih now, and I'm still not attending it.

For quite a few reasons, or excuses to others.

1. I signed a contract that I would not involve myself in political issues. Back then when I signed it, I simply thought it meant I would avoid political ceramahs (by the opposition, of course. No prob with BN's. =P ). No problem to me. Now that Bersih is happening again, and students in public unis are now allowed to be a part of public rallies, I'm reminded of my simple thoughts for signing the contract back then. Back then, I was glad enough JPA had not blacklisted me because I had (1) turned down their law scholarship to Australia without even a letter, and (2) I had breached my KPM contract with them and they demanded for payment although I tried to give them valid reasons. People will tell me to breach my contract, heck, if I'm caught, it'll look bad on the government and all when they withdraw my scholarship. But if it's MY RM110k that we're talking about paying back, I may consider doing it. But right now the RM110k penalty will come from my family. And that, I don't want. I know well enough that whatever decisions I make affect the people around me. When I was younger I used to think for me, myself and I. But now I realise that whatever I do, whatever stupid decisions I make, it'll hurt those around me.

2. It's been so politicised that I'm rather uncomfortable with it now. It's as if the entire opposition has entered this rally, and it's moved from a general, civilian plea to becoming a political tool for all non-gov parties. I'm somewhat a bit skeptical of the motives of many.

3. Plain and simple, I don't want to make my mum worry her heart away. Haha. There are times when I make her worry about the decisions I make, but this one I need not cause her worry. In time to come I probably will have to make heart-wrenching choices, but not this time. When I'm well and truly independent, when people no longer ask me what my parents work as, then I'll make such decisions.

Anyway, all the best to those going, especially to the Low family... I feel pangs of worry as I think of the long walk the older ones will have to go through, but nothing feeds better energy than passion.

Till then,
Jo

Today, in my ASEAN class in which we were having lectures on refugees, to my complete shock, my other coursemates had never before heard of the Rohingya refugees! As in, didn't even know they existed. -__- I kind of had the idea that we were all aware of this gross acts of human abuse/genocide by now, but apparently not.

This is my 3rd course touching on refugees, and each time it really, really disgusts me, and yet it really creates this yearning in me to DO SOMETHING. I've spent semesters now researching and presenting on the gross acts of human abuse on the refugees.

Wait the girls just told me they are reaching my house in 2 mins time! Without prior warning about even GOING OUT! I'm off, be back later!

Blababla

A lot has been happening lately, but mainly revolving around my busy uni life.

Yesterday I attended 2 CGs, one which I had to lead (PKV) and another in which I was happy enough to sit back and hear others talk (20s). One of them shed a lot of light on the view of others towards relationships... now, unlike other girls, I've never been the kind of girl to sit around and talk about relationships, my hopes and dreams for it, how it's like, etc. I've been in one for a pretty short/long time now (the length of time depends on who is asking - older couples say 1.5 years is short, younger ones say it's long. It doesn't matter to me because I intend for it to last... lol) but rarely talk about relationships unless I'm led into talking about it. I don't know why, but I guess because I know every relationship is different, and there are no two 'like' relationships. Unless we all shared same personalities and dated others with similar personalities or something, then the world would be a boring place. But yesterday I realised that my idea of my relationship (in terms of our future together) is pretty much one that is not shared by others... some had the view that it could be pushed aside for now, and were basically unimportant although they were currently in relationships.

But anyway, if I type anything further I'll be breaching my CG's code of honour. Haha, so yeah, that's just a fleeting thought.

Today Yan invited me up to Penang to accompany Elaine in her interview... to be her "interview coach". Haha while I really, really wanted to do it, have a get away from the hectic uni life here (and if there is one campus apart from UMS that I really really want to visit, it's USM!), I cannot afford to skip anymore drama practices, and going on Tues & Wed next week meant exactly that. So I very sadly had to say no. :-(

Oh well, I'll coach her from here. Though I think she ought to have no problem handling herself. Haha. :-)

Seeing the in-laws this weekend! :-)

Eh! Seeing Joash this weekend too!

Hahaha.

Ok, back to assignments!

*Deep breath*

It is good to have Joash.

...

...

...

...

...

I think ... simply sums up life these days.

I keep thinking of the story in which the young boy hammers a nail into his fence each time he loses his temper, and when he removes the nails all that is left are deep, permanently irreparable holes.

...

Really, ... sums up life these days.

But it's the end of sem blues I guess...

Not making any sense here...

Gotta harden my heart more I guess, can't survive in this ruthless world otherwise.

Anyway, on a more positive note, Joash's business is moving in a new direction! So proud of him and all that he has achieved! :-)

Off to bed now, long day ahead of me... I dislike Tuesdays.

My former schoolmates have graduated/will graduate this year!

And I've got another TWO years to go.

-__-

Haha, I know, no rush, no rush, guess that's the price I'll have to pay for choosing form 6 and a local U.

:-)

At least I love my degree. ;-)

Zzzzz

Exhausted...

Exhausted till I'm in the blurry stage.

Fuzzy brain, unfocused, blur vision. Haha. And the funniest thing is... (verbal irony)

I still have to go on.

Final 4 weeks, all the assignments are in, I look at my workload and laugh to myself.

Dang.

Tell me why I'm doing all these again?? -__-

Why do I try so hard??

Mmm I know the answer. Just need to hear it out loud sometimes.

Go Joanne Go...

Exhausted, Blurry Eyes

And I still have to go on. Barely halfway done.

Zzz.

I personally think it would be nice to have a personal assistant who could help me in finding research materials and preparing presentations.

Haha.

In your dreams, Joanne. In your freaking dreams.

And it's not even week 10 yet.

Oh my.

Top that off with 8am-6pm classes tomorrow. -__-

I need help...

Hello Alfalfa!

Just a quick post before I continue on with my work..

The amount of work I have to catch up on after missing only 1 week is astounding!

With so many things on my mind.

I've asked for so many extensions for everything it's unbelievable. I'm surprised my editor still entertains my requests!

Anyway, despite my busy schedule I managed to catch 2 movies recently... haha. Battleship and The Flowers of War. Battleship was a big disappointment, with a failure what they they called a plot and such predictable script I was blown away with disgust. Haha... I think it's this thing to do with me improving on my movie review articles and also script-writing classes.

The second movie was much better, definitely had a lot of human touch which Battleship completely lacked. At some points a wee bit too stressful though, and kept reminding me of The Rape of Nanking. I daresay it's one of the best movies I've caught of late, even beating Hunger Games because I knew what to expect in the latter and things were too good to be true in Hunger Games. The Flowers of War spoke of true pain and anguish that mankind is wont to inflict upon themselves.

I skipped some Bengkel Pelajar Cemerlang today ("wajib" for students with CGPA 3.5 and above) because my MASUM letter had me covered up to today, and I missed too many classes to attend such an event. On other days I would have gone, pretty interesting and useful topics I think, but today, I couldn't. Was scrambling to find all sorts of excuses to skip it when I pulled out my MASUM letter and oh joy, it said I was to be excused until the 17th of April! =D Hahaha!

It was also until 3pm and I had tuition at 1.30-2.30pm. My students are more important than this!

I've been contemplating lately.. about tapping into the English Literature tuition world. I know there's a dire lack of teachers for this subject... very, very few teachers are involved in this. Haha. Simply because I thoroughly enjoy teaching, and oh what a joy if I could teach my favourite subject!

Ok, I'm secretly trying to force my current English students into loving literature, but it's only worked for one thus far. My other 2 students are too busy trying to score straight As to worry about loving anything they study. -__- I will try harder...

Really, it's a serious thought.

More money!

People wonder why I want to start working so quickly. I've been told numerous times to enjoy my student life, because the working life is so stressful it's not worth it. Me, I prefer to believe that most of these people never really worked hard on their studies when they were students. All my studying life, I've slept less and worked later into the night than most of the working people around me ever have. The only times I enjoy are my holidays... even then, I will have some sort of work to do. The pains I put into projects, assignments, presentations, and exams eat up so many hours I sometimes survive on only 4-5 hours of sleep a night without naps in between.

So why did I take up tuition and writing articles with my hectic life? For $ la, what else! Haha, also for the experience. I've given up all my free afternoons to tuition classes now, my Tuesdays are from 1.30-2.30, 3-4.30, and 4.30-6.30pm. On top of my 8am-12pm uni classes in the morning. I have felt like quitting everything, especially like today, when I only had 4 hours of sleep the night before. But no, the sense of responsibility that comes along with this job...

One thing I've learnt, something I've always struggled with my whole life, is to procrastinate less. I've noticed that I now do things nearly instantly, simply because I know I cannot afford to procrastinate anymore. A lot of room for improvement, but hey, at least there is SOME positive change in this aspect!

Talk about a learning experience this sem. At least with MASUM over, I no longer have to attend training 3-4 times a week. *phew*

Anyway, have a wonderful day ahead of you!

God bless,
Jo

I'm home!

And I'm completely exhausted. Haha the past 11 days was about worrying only about me, myself and I... Now I'm back in the real world everything has piled up.

My guitar teacher is chasing me, my editor is chasing me, my tuition student's mum is practically begging me to push her daughter to be in the stars when the daughter is contented watching the sky...

That's on top of all the work and assignments and presentations that are due this week.

Gah.

Had a good day with Joash today though, after such a long hiatus from him! Hehe.

Overall, fantastic experience in MASUM, I've made a bunch of new friends that I really love although I've only known them for 11 days.

Too tired for details, have a goodnight... Finally a working ceiling fan for me to sleep well tonight!

God bless,
Jo

Day 5

My team is in quarter finals... Currently watching the men singles, against USM. Nerve-wrecking!

I played yesterday, partnered a Malaysian player, played like a complete noob. Kept making mistakes, stupid mistakes, inaccurate shots, retarded shots. Whatever else you ca think of la.

Anyway we won despite my bad playing, no thanks to me. Of course I felt like I played horribly also because my partner was so darn good haha but I know I played badly anyhow.

Truthfully I hope they don't field me in anymore games for this MASUM. So frustrated after my game yesterday, it's either I go back after this and train properly or give up badminton. Seriously. There is no point remaining in my current level of nothingness.. Either improve or drop out.

And take up long distance running.

Hahaha.

At least I just need to run and not worry about ins and outs and accurate shots.

Lol.

Anyway, back to the game, now rubber set for men singles, our player found back his oomph and looks set to win!

I hope.

Till I blog again,
Jo

Ello UNIMAS!

Hi hi, am currently blogging from Sakura college, UNIMAS.

Yes, I'm now studying in Sarawak. Doing work now! Haha.

Anyway, will be here for 11 days, MASUM.. Inter-varsity annual sports tournament.. I'm playing badminton.. Haha, the only sport I know.

Am sweating here cause they decided switching on the electricity for the room fans would be too dangerous for us. Some lame excuse like that.

I'm surrounded by Chinese-speaking and Malay-speaking people. Haha. Oh well, at this rate both languages will improve.

Only day 2 here.. Tournament starts Sunday. Been here since yesterday, first badminton team to arrive. We begin our days with early morning training. LOL. Nothing stressful though, that's the best thing about tournament trainings.. Just light stuff! Went around Kuching town today, ended up in 2 malls.. I would have preferred seeing the cultural side of Sarawak instead of a mall I can get anywhere in PJ/KL but the rest wanted to goto a mall. Currently 12 players here, another 4 coming tomorrow and we will be complete!

Anyway, gtg now, missing a precious someone.. Good thing we have technology! :D

My final pic before I left home.

God bless!
Jo
